e-Portfolios: Home

As a learner at CCT, you may be required to produce an e-portfolio as part of the module or overall programme assessment strategy.

At CCT College Dublin, students are encouraged to use Google Sites to design their portfolios. Google Sites can be accessed via Gmail and it is a free product that offers a number of ready-made portfolio templates.

The advantages of using Google Sites to create an e-portfolio include:

  1. Easy to Use: Google Sites is user-friendly and easy to use, even for those without technical expertise. This makes it a great option for students and educators who want to create e-portfolios quickly and efficiently.

  2. Customization: Google Sites offers a wide range of customization options, allowing students to personalize their e-portfolios to their specific needs and preferences. This includes options for design, layout, and content.

  3. Collaboration: Google Sites allows for real-time collaboration, making it easy for students to work together on projects and assignments. This can be particularly beneficial for group projects and can help foster a sense of teamwork and cooperation among students.

  4. Accessibility: Google Sites can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, making it easy for students to work on their e-portfolios from home, in the library, or on the go. This can be especially useful for students who have busy schedules and need to be able to work on their e-portfolios at their convenience.

  5. Storage: Google Sites provides ample storage space, so students can include a large number of files and documents in their e-portfolios. This can be particularly useful for students who want to showcase a variety of projects and assignments.

  6. Sharing: Google Sites makes it easy for students to share their e-portfolios with others, including classmates, teachers, and potential employers. This can help students build their professional network and demonstrate their skills and abilities to others.

JISC (2019) defines an e-portfolio as a "digital representation of a student's academic experiences, achievements, and future goals, tailored for a specific audience." It is seen as a valuable tool for 21st-century learning, as it involves skills such as organizing and planning, giving and receiving feedback, reflection, and effective communication with the target audience.

There are different types of e-portfolios, including:

  1. Showcase or Professional ePortfolios: These portfolios showcase a student's best academic work, as well as their extracurricular activities and work placements.

  2. Learning ePortfolios: These portfolios document a student's learning journey for a particular course or program. They are reflective in nature and may involve peer learning and feedback. They are often used as part of formative assessments and feedback processes.

  3. Assessment e-Portfolios: These portfolios may be required as part of a course or program assessment strategy. They are created by students to showcase their knowledge and skills related to a particular subject or topic.
